Alleyway scene/Alturnate Script for the office scene

Key:

Italics: Narration

Brackets: Actions from characters

A woman walks nervously out of an apartment into the street where the street lamps shone brightly in the night. Wrapping herself tight in her coat for security she begins to wonder down the street.

Woman: (clutches her coat tightly around herself while nervously fiddling with the buttons on her coat.)

As she passes a small, narrow alley way she is surprised to see a dark hooded figure emerge from nowhere and leans against a nearby wall. Startling the women, she bumps into him

Woman: “Oh sorry, didn’t see you there.”

The man arrogantly ignores her apology and blows a puff of smoke from his pipe in her face. After being appalled by his horrible behaviour she walked away trying to calm her nerves after the shock of bumping into him.

(The sound of footsteps emerge from the silence of the street)

Beginning to feel paranoid that she is being followed she stops and checks behind her, however no one was there. She begins to walk again but as she begins to hear footsteps again her paranoia increases, as does her pace.

(The sound of footsteps gets louder above the natural noises of the street)

Woman: (swiftly turns around to check again)

As she turns her eye catches a dark figure in the distance acting suspicious. Getting slightly freaked out the woman turns and rushes to the end of the street where she turns a corner and begins to run. After turning another corner she stops to catch her breath not long after she peers around the corner to see if she can see the figure, however there is no one there. Thinking she had lost him, she turns around to continue walking when out of nowhere the same figure steps out in front of her standing tall and intimidating.

Woman: (Looks up at the figure’s face, shocked to see him stand in front of her)

Man: (Forcefully grabs the women’s arm and shoves her into a nearby alley way)

Woman: “Hey! What are you doing? Get off me! (She struggles to try and escape the man’s tight grip on her arm) You’re hurting me! Please get off! (Tries to scream.)

The man viciously covers her mouth with his dirty, scrawny hands to stop her from screaming. His face was covered by the shadows of his hat and all that was visible was his chin. Nothing is visible but the darkness of the alley way and the sounds of struggle from the woman.

Woman: (She yanks off his hat to reveal the face that had been hidden underneath his face. Shocked by who she saw she bites the finger covering her mouth and him and runs out of the alley way.)

She scans the street for help as she staggers down the road to find a safe place to hide. She was barely half way down the road when the unknown figure emerges from the shadows.

Man: (Draws a pistol from his jacket pocket and raises his arm.)

The shadow of the man’s arm remains on the side of a wall before pulling the trigger.

Cuts to credits

The scene opens with a medium close up the camera slowing scanning across the table seeing past case papers/folders of photos and newspaper articles of his glory days of when he was a successful detective. The camera continues to slowly scan over the table until it reaches up to detective Spade looking at the tipped over bottle and the tumbler glass next to his hand, before slowly rising up to see him sprawled over the table. There is a sudden knock at the door, as we hear Jims voice calling out his name through the door. The camera eventually starts to focus up on the door as the audience see Jim enter the room.

Stage directions

(Medium close up of Jim’s Face)

Jim: How you doing Spade?

(hear a slight groan from the table while the camera is still focusing on Jim)

Jim: oh can’t be that bad surely (Jim walks over to the window violently opening the blinds)

Spade:  (no reply all we hear is groaning)

The camera see jim turns around looking confused as he sees all of the papers. The light illuminates over the table lighting up all of the papers over the table. Jim walks towards the table sliding the papers and past case folders to one side. The camera changes to a POV shot as the camera scans over the table seeing the past photos underneath, with the recent newspaper articles of ‘Detective Spade: Hero to Zero’

Jim: (the camera changes to medium close up, while he whispers under his breath) or maybe it is

Jim: Spade what’s with all the papers?

There is no reply from Spade as the camera pans over to Spade as he leans up from the table

Jim: I have a new case that’s if you are interested? (we see Jim drop the folder on the table infront of spade) what do you say re-live the glory days

Spade: (shouting at Jim) No! no, I done, done with all of this (he reaches for the half empty tumbler)

Spade: you want to know why I have kept all of these papers?

Camera pans to a POV shot from Spade) We see Jim with a disconcerting look on his face

Spade: To remind me never to go back to that.

Jim: please just take a look at it I think that might just meet your fancy.

We see Jim slide the paper closer to Spade who looks longingly at the folder while sipping out of the tumbler.

Jim: (begging) please, you are the only one who can help with this case.

Spade slowly reaches for the folder dragging it over the various pieces of paper, gradually turning over the first page. While Jim waits with anticipation

Spade: Interesting. (alarmed tone to his voice) She’s a politician’s daughter?

Jim desperately nods his head in Spades direction.

Jim: believe me Spade if you want to get back into the detective business this one is gonna blow it out the water (as he points his finger at the case folder) The rates are good for this case…

Spade again looks down at the folder then at the tumbler

Spade: I guess so, you… you really believe that this can get me back into business?

We see jim nod his head slowly

Jim: so what do you say Spade are you ready to make history? Are you in?

We see spade slam down the tumbler glass

Spade: Yeah… I’m in. (cuts to darkness)
